Discover Essaouira, Morocco

I decided to start out the day by learning some about Essaouira since I'll be spending the coming days here, and of course I'm sharing my newfound knowledge with you.^^

The importance  of Essaouira, or Mogador as it used to be called, as one of the best anchorages of the Moroccan coast goes all the way back to the 5th century BC.
Many great powers fought to conquer the locality, such as Spain, Portugal, England and France, but it wasn't until the 18th century that the city found its modern lines, and it's current name "Souira" (The small fortress) became Es-Saouira (The beautifully designed).
Until the end of the 19th century Essaouira served as Morocco's principal port, and inhabited a large Jewish community to handle the trade with Europe. Just as in Marrakesh, the Jewish quarter in Essaouira is called "Mellah".

Today Essaouira is probably mostly known to be a popular site for a day excursion for guests lodging in Marrakesh, being it's closest coastal city, or thanks to the annual Gnaoua Festival is held in Essaouira in late June; A fusion between great Gnaoua Maâlems (Masters), Jazz, African music and other surprises.
You can see a video from the Jemma El Fna Square with Gnaouas performing here, or have a look at this video from this year's festival.

So now it's time for breakfast and then we're off sightseeing!^^
